That time we took on the Great Ocean Road

Before beginning our lengthy stay at the flat in Melbourne (property of Anna's incredibly generous mum), we had some time to kill in Port Fairy and along the Great Ocean Road. Thankfully, there's no better place to do that than on Australia's stunning east coast.

On our second and only full day in Port Fairy, Anna and I decided to walk through the township. The houses along the main roads were charming and the local businesses were very trendy. Our walk along the port itself almost felt like a step back in time with its waterfront houses, weather-beaten jetties and hardy fishing vessels. A walk around Griffith Island, located south-east of the port, allowed us to experience Port Fairy's natural coastal environment and wildlife, and gave us some insight into the historical geological processes that characterises the region. After snapping a couple of photos with the Griffith Island Lighthouse, we headed back to our campsite and took some time to rest in anticipation of some jam-packed days ahead.

The following day marked the start of our grand, 2-day tour of the Great Ocean Road. On day 1, we visited The Grotto, the slightly-fewer-than Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge, the Bay of Martyrs, took a short walk through the Otway National Park and spent the night in Apollo Bay. Here are some photos of our stopovers!

On the second day, we felt the mist of Erskine Falls and the chill of Swallow Cave, walked inside the lighthouse that was used as the set for Round the Twist, and, Anna's favourite part of the day, we saw some alpacas. ALPACAS!

A truly Great Ocean Road!

That afternoon, given how beautiful the weather was, we stopped over at a number of quaint, shorefront towns. Of all of these, we were particularly blown away by the beachside bustle and scenery of Lorne! That evening, after a hectic drive into Melbourne's CBD, we unpacked our gear and made ourselves at home in the city; so began our 1 month hiatus in the heart of Australia's second most populated city.

A short and sweet post to round off our time on the road for the next month or so. More instalments to come over the next few days!
